BAND GROUPIES Q&A by Tina Wheeler (mom to Freshman Andrew Ward, Trombone) Looks like the votes declared Band Groupie Q & A will be the new title of our column! Thanks to all of those who gave your input. Now, let’s get down to business. The first question we will address is: “What is the difference between an Invitational and an ISSMA Competition?” The difference between the two was explained to me by Kathy Baker, mom of Junior Jacob Baker (bari sax). “It’s like pre-season warm up” Kathy said. The invitationals are designed to point out what things need improvement before they are judged for the ‘real thing.’ Thanks for the info, Kathy! As for why the judges are from out of state, I called ISSMA for the info. Unfortunately, I didn’t get the gentleman’s name, but if he reads this article, thank you for the great information! The idea for having judges from out of state is to help with prejudice. Sometimes, that is not always possible, and in those situations, the judges can be from Indiana. However, they cannot work for an Indiana band within the current season. Also, if the judge has worked with an Indiana band, they are not allowed to judge within that same class. For example, if a judge worked with Plainfield, he or she could not do any judging for class B band contests. He or she could, however, judge class A bands. Those are all the questions for this week. Please submit your new questions to me at tinawheeler1011@comcast.net by Monday, October 17. Good luck Marching Red Pride! Take it to the state!
