WHAT DO BAND PARENTS WANT TO KNOW? by Tina Wheeler (mom to Freshman Andrew Ward, Trombone) Hello, fellow band parents, and welcome to our new column! This column will be about the things we wanted to know about band, but never asked. Like where do the judges come from? What makes them qualified to judge a contest? What’s the difference between an Invitational and an ISSMA competition? What things will the judges take points off for? Several of us have questions, but don’t know where to turn for answers. Some of us are in the dark, and just accept “because” as an answer, or we go to the wrong source. For example, when I asked my son, Andrew, why the band kids call themselves “Band Geeks,” he tells me, “because we can.” I’d like to get your own questions. What I might want to know could be different from what you’d like to know. So please email me your questions each week, and I will get to work on finding the answers for you. Now that we have gotten the tough stuff out of the way, what are we going to call this new column? I think everything important deserves a name, so let’s do this. Below is a list of names I have come up with to title this new “blog” of ours. Since I don’t know which one to choose, I’ll need your help. Let’s vote on the one you like best, and send me your questions. We will reveal the winning title in next week’s column along with answers to your questions.
Send your submission for the name of this new article along with your question to tinawheeler1011@comcast.net by Monday, October 10. DON’T FORGET THOSE SOCKS Please remind your kids to bring their black socks to competition and to bring them back home to be washed. The Uniform Moms do not wash socks, so if your band member isn’t making that weekly contribution to the family’s laundry, it’s going to be unpleasantly noticeable pretty soon!
