FROM THE PRESIDENT: KEEP UP THE GOOD JOB!

By Suzanne Kamel-Mohamed

As the season progresess and the workload increases, I see that everyone is more determined to carry more and to do more. What a wonderful group, what wonderful parents, what a wonderful family. Yes, we are a band family that works hard together unselfishly.

You can see that attitude is reflecting on our band kids. They are working their hardest with no complaints and are helping each other tremendously. Above all, they are having a great time and fun.

Thank you parents for all what you have done so far, and what are you doing now!

KNOW HOW A WRENCH WORKS?

We’re having a work day for pit carts and the semi-trailer on Saturday, August 27 from about 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. We’ll address these needs:

1. Reconfigure racks inside of trailer
2. Repair wheels/castors on pit carts and design new keyboard cart
3. Clean up pit storage inside of high school

If you have hand tools, please bring them with you. Email Ken Thompson at kthompson2@indy.rr.com or call him at 710-8268 with questions.

 ANNUAL PIZZA SALE UNDERWAY

This week, students received brochures and sales forms for the annual Pizza Sale fundraiser. In past years, we’ve had great success selling delicious pizzas, desserts and cookie dough from Club’s Choice Fundraising. The band program uses the profits for equipment and related needs.

Order forms must be turned in by Monday, August 29, and all items will be delivered to the PHS Band Room on Thursday, September 8 at 2:45 p.m. Band members don’t have to collect payments (checks payable to Plainfield HS Band) until products are delivered. (If your son or daughter rides the bus home, you may want to make alternate travel arrangements that day!)

There will be a couple great incentives. First, students who sell 15 items or more will be entered in a drawing for one of three $25 cash prizes. The top seller of all will win a digital binocular camera. We’ll also have a team competition, with the winning team earning a dinner. Your student has all the details.

 FESTIVAL BRIEFS

- Saturday, September 17 marks the annual Red Pride Marching Festival, and many of the state’s top bands will be there. Among the bands that will perform are Brownsburg, Terre Haute South, Northview, Jasper, Greenwood and New Castle.

- Around Labor Day, Suzanne and Toby will call band and guard parents to ask for volunteer time and donations of food. We’ll ask each family to donate a 24-pack of bottled water or a cola product – and we’ll collect those donations during the week of practice (details to come). We also hope everyone can bring a cooler with a bag of ice on the day of the festival.

- Debbie Exner needs help this week and next arranging food donations from local merchants to ensure that our judges, visiting band directors and volunteers are well-fed. If you can help, call Debbie at 839-8342.

- Please plan to stick around after the festival to help with cleanup. All the band members will help with cleanup at the end of the night, and will not be dismissed until their areas pass inspection. The more parents that help, the sooner everyone goes home!

- Festival workers and band members should park in Swinford Park so there’s plenty of room for spectator parking at the high school.

 SPECIAL THANKS TO

Monroe Bank for becoming a sponsor of the Red Pride Marching Band Festival – and to Mike McNeely for encouraging them to do so!

 TRASH BAGS ARE HERE

The trash bags we’ve ordered have arrived, and can be purchased through the Band Boosters. We also need help to sell them at the home football games, band festival, band concerts and other events. If you can lend a hand, please contact Bill Bloom at bloomacres@juno.com or 839-4806, or Randi Brinker at rbrinker@kingswayschool.org or 838-7569 (cell 979-0860)!

FOR GUARD PARENTS

Help our young women look their best by donating items we’ll need at competition, such as bobby pins, pony ties, gel, hair spray, makeup applicators, safety pins, band aids and cold packs.

Is your daughter new to guard? We’re ordering new wind suits. The jackets have the Quaker emblem and embroidered names. The girls wear them to and from competitions, and while they’re at the competitions. The cost is $70 (checks payable to County West Sports). Any questions? Ask Ashley or Rachel, or call Toby Shutters at 837-8954.

 BUTTONS, BUTTONS, WE HAVE BUTTONS

As a fundraiser, we’re selling a variety of Plainfield Band buttons. Show your support for just $2. See Tom or Toby Shutters. Or, for just $4, we’ll make a personalized button with your son or daughter’s photo. Ask Tom for more details (and be sure we’ve taken your son or daughter’s photo).
