PHS BAND BOOSTER BLAST For Boosters and Friends of the PHS Red Pride Marching Band July 29, 2005
FROM THE PRESIDENT: WELCOME TO THE BLAST! By Suzanne Kamel-Mohamed It is my pleasure to welcome all of you to this first edition of the Band Boosters' e-newsletter. Good communication is critical to the organization's success. With it, we can accomplish a lot and avoid misunderstandings and missed opportunities. Thanks to Scott Flood and Tom Travis for making this e-newsletter possible.
The Band Boosters are an integral part of the band and guard, and essential for their success. In return for our moral and financial support, we receive unforgettable memories that we'll share with our kids for a lifetime and the self-satisfaction that comes with contributing to our community. We're a family that's working toward common goals of giving our children the best, providing opportunities to succeed, and helping them have a wonderful high school experience.
Let's work together and support each other. Parents of upperclassmen, please welcome the parents of the freshmen. Help them feel at home!
I wish our band students, director, staff members and our organization the best of everything and a successful year!
FOR THE WELL-DRESSED BOOSTER Once again, the Band Boosters are offering attractive, high-quality apparel that enhances your wardrobe and helps us offset our costs. We're planning to place another order in late August, so if you'd like to purchase any of these items, see our fashion expert, Jeanne Milligan, or call her at 839-7328. (*Items with an asterisk can be personalized.) Polo Parent shirt* $23 Tie-dyed shirt $13 Crew sweatshirt $20 Hooded sweatshirt $26 House flag* $30 Small flag $15 Yard sign* $20
BAND CAMP: AUGUST 1 THROUGH 5 The temperature and humidity are climbing, so Marching Band Camp must be right around the corner! This year's edition will run from Monday, August 1st to Friday, August 5th, beginning Monday morning at 8:00 a.m. in the PHS Band Room.
Students must be there and ready at 8:00 a.m. As Mr. Roberts says, to be early is to be on time; to be on time is to be late; to be late is to be dead. They'll be dismissed at 4:30. They should bring a sack lunch for each day, and spending money for snacks. Parents are welcome to observe, but we'd appreciate your help in keeping distractions to a minimum. That's why we don't allow friends to stop by and visit.
Shoes, socks and shirts must be worn at all times. Everyone should have a water bottle, rainwear, medicine, sunscreen, and bug spray – along with a pencil and pad, and a can of spray paint to mark the field. Guard members should also bring practice flags, and band members will need their music (a carpenter's nail pouch provides a handy way to carry everything).
Special message to parents of freshmen: expect your kids to be miserable all week. They'll complain about the heat, the fatigue, the director, other band members, and anything else that comes to mind. By Wednesday, you'll probably have to force them out the door in the morning. All that is perfectly normal, and is something they'll forget the first time we earn a trophy in this year's competitions. Just take a deep breath and know that they'll sleep well that week!
SEE A GREAT DRUM CORPS SHOW On Saturday, July 30 at 7:00 p.m., the RCA Dome will host the DCI Midwestern Championships Drum Corps Show. This is an outstanding, inspiring event for band members to attend on their own. Tickets can be obtained by calling 1-800-495-7469 x3, or order online at www.dci.org.
DON'T FORGET YOUR SHORTS & SOCKS During the competition season, every band member must provide his or her own plain black socks and plain white shorts. We'll handle the rest of the uniform!
This year's Annual Red Pride Marching Band Festival will take place on September 17, and we're already hard at work to ensure that our main fundraiser of the year is a huge success. To make that happen, we need everyone's help – and that includes you! Please contact chairpersons Toby Shutters (tshutters@yahoo.com, 837-8954) or Suzanne Kamel-Mohamed (skamel@clarian.org, 839-1704) to learn how you can help.
